Never a man to shy away from a challenge, Steve Dale had been self employed for 12 years when he began to look for yet another test of his entrepreneurial spirit!
After looking at several franchise systems Steve says, "Some franchises were too large in terms of investment and others too small to be anything other than a source of secondary income." He goes on to say, "I wanted something that would offer me a good level of income but didn’t involve having to rent premises and employ staff from day one."
As a result Steve decided to join NBC Bird & Pest Solutions. He explains, "I wanted to be able to go into an established business where the infrastructure was already in place, and I was impressed by NBC’s business model and ongoing support."
Steve says, "I enjoy being in control of my own destiny and the challenge of being self employed. Having been self employed, I know how lonely it can be at times." He continues, "Being part of the franchise network is beneficial from that point of view, as there’s always someone to share problems and ideas with."
During his training at NBC’s head office, Steve’s wife Kelly joined him for a day to learn about the administration side of the business, which she will be undertaking on his behalf and his son is looking forward to helping with the birds.
Steve has set his sights high and says, "I want to exceed the NBC franchisee average income and be in a position to take on an employee by the end of my first year."
He jokes "I’d like to take on enough employees to free up some time to spend on the golf course!" With his positive outlook and willingness to rise to a challenge - Steve’s dream could very soon become a reality!
After 17 years of working as a police officer and becoming increasingly disillusioned, Ian Maynard decided enough was enough and made the decision to work for himself.
Ian says, "I spent years working for someone else and decided if I worked that hard for myself and my family, I’d really achieve something." He goes on to say, "I wanted a complete change and to become self employed. I didn’t have any business experience but the NBC pest control franchise offered me the support I felt I needed to get my business off the ground."
Ian’s final decision to join the NBC franchise was influenced by his keen interest in falconry. He says, "I’ve been a hobby falconer since 1996 and I liked the idea of using the birds in my work. I wanted a healthy outdoor lifestyle, interesting and varied work and something that would utilise my communication and people skills – NBC ticked all the boxes!"
Married with two teenage sons, Ian was keen to involve the whole family in his decision making process. "My wife supported throughout and will be playing an active part in the business by looking after the admin side of things," he says. "My sons are interested in helping out with the birds and ultimately, I’d like to employs them in the business" making it a real family affair.
Ian says, "My goal is to establish a secure business with a good contract portfolio and a decent level of income which will increase year on year."
