Subway Overtakes McDonald's in Fast Food League

From the BBC: Sandwich group Subway has overtaken McDonald's as the world's largest restaurant chain, the company has said.

The fast-food franchise had 33,749 sites across the globe at the end of last year, compared with 32,737 for McDonald's.

In recent years, US-based Subway has made a major push into international markets with its successful franchised business model, which emphasises small, low-cost outlets.

The privately-owned company said it had been "on a great run".

Salad Bar Franchise Founder Wins Award

The founder of Tossed, the fast casual healthy eating group, has been named among the top 30 hospitality figures by Caterer and Hotelkeeper.

Vincent Mckevitt, 29, received the accolade at the catering trade publication’s annual Acorn Awards.

Started in 1986 to recognise the 30 hospitality figures under the age of 30 that represent tomorrow’s leading lights, the Acorn Awards have spotted the likes of Marco Pierre White, Gary Rhodes and Marcus Wearing, all of whom rose to celebrity chef fame.

Since founding his smoothie and salad bar franchise in 2005, Mckevitt has opened seven units, created 100 jobs and been picked as ‘the one to watch’ for hospitality in The Observer’s ‘Future 500’ list.

Sub sandwich franchise Opening Stores

Baguette Express is opening 16 stores across the UK, defying the downturn.

Creating 200 jobs as total unemployment continues to rise the sub sandwich franchise will have a total of 70 Baguette franchise outlets by the end of the year.

New stores are opening in prime city centre locations in Manchester, Newcastle and London in England, and Aberdeen, Kilmarnock, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow and the Maxim Office Park at Eurocentral off the M8 in Scotland.

New Jobs at Subway Franchise Amid More Cuts

From The BBC: The US sandwich chain Subway has confirmed plans to open 600 new stores in the UK and the Irish Republic, which could lead to more than 7,000 new jobs.

The Subway announcement came on a day when 2,300 jobs were cut across the UK.

Among others, power company E.ON cut 450 jobs, retailer Zavvi cut 295 jobs, while engineering group Cookson confirmed it would cut nearly 180 jobs.
